Baking Disasters

The summer is a busy time of year for the Winter-Hunt household. Between birthdays (3), family visits (never enough) and house projects (laundry, fences, chores…ugggggh) we’re constantly on the go.

July started off with a visit from Tristan, the latest family addition. Next up: Passion party! And finally, daily life/household duties. I don’t have a lot of photos to post. Lately I’ve been trying very hard to enjoy focusing on a moment and a memory – which funny enough, can be a little difficult with a well-focused camera in the way.

So, a quick recap of the past few weeks:

Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Bread

Maybe I mixed this wrong. Maybe I crossed a black cat. Maybe I just plain deserved this. Whatever the issue, this gluten free bread mix + bananas came out horribly wrong. I even tried to pretend it was delicious and feigned a tasteful bite, only to promptly spit it out and say, “No! Kill it with fire!” It’s a shame, because I really respect Bob’s Red Mill products. Honestly, I probably screwed things up…speaking of which:

Champagne Cupcakes! Or not.

Two baking disasters in one day? Sure.

I was a bit ambitious hosting a Passion Party the same weekend as Independence Day. However, if it’s not plainly clear by now: I’m not afraid of failure. I have an old standby-no fail-pink champagne cupcake recipe that I use as needed. For this party? Why not fold egg whites delicately into angel mist and hope for the best?

I was wrong. Deliciously wrong, but wrong nonetheless. They weren’t…terrible. But they ended up flimsy and messy. The odd baking disaster doesn’t phase me too much, but switching from gluten-free to gluten and have them both betray me? Not cool, Julia Child. Not cool.

Pink Champagne Cupcakes


Gluten, I will own you! If not own you, I will at least dye you pink and stab you with decorative hearts. Isn’t that how we solve most of life’s problems? At least on Pinterest we do. I pulled out my old-standby at the 11th hour and had pink champagne cupcakes at the ready with strawberry centers (Oh, I forgot the fruit at the store? $%$#%#@%@)

Lastly, my favorite memory-inducing photo of the month. Strawberries and sugar (for cupcakes and life necessities – thanks to an unforeseen trip to the store). We had our first amazing monsoon of the season and opened up all the doors and windows to fully enjoy the humid, spectacular show of summer. Something about chopping strawberries in muggy weather reminds me of the east coast. I love it.

Sugar and Strawberries

It soothes. It restores. It nourishes. It provides an excuse to indulge.

A touch of sugar, and all of the weekend’s minor disasters rolled out of the desert with the evening storm.

All that’s left? Passion. Cupcakes. Sugar.

  • Love, love, love this! Especially the practice of staying in the moment and taking less pictures to enjoy it.

      Thanks, Jen! Baking disasters are typically still pretty delicious. So we can’t complain too much.
